Steel Frame With CMU Infill Wall Bracing Condition

Steel Frame With CMU Infill Wall Bracing Condition

Steel Frame With CMU Infill Wall Bracing Condition

(OP)
Can somebody shed some light at the structural analysis reasoning behind the system where you have CMu Bearing Shear Walls enclosing a steel frame where you have only shear connections (No Moment resistant type whatsoever). Most of the bays of the frame or all, are infilled with cmu and the brick veneer is on the outside plane.

What considerations should be taken for potential cracking due to significant wind load displacement. The typical building would be 5 to 7 stories high and seismic does not control de design.
Regards, any thoughts would be appreciated.

RE: Steel Frame With CMU Infill Wall Bracing Condition

We've designed buildings that were Moment frame, but had exterior brick and CMU, this could be the architects choice, I believe the recommended displacemnt for masonry is H/600.

The CMU enclosure, if properly connected, could be incorporated into a shearwall system, the steel frame may allow for faster erection of the building, then the masons may come later and infill. The details might be tricky though.
