Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

(OP)
I am taking a class on 3D modeling right now with Catia, using version 5 rev 14.  At work, we have v5 rev 16.  I do all my tutorials in the book and email them to my teacher, who sends them to her graders, who have rev. 14, and cant open my rev 16 file.

Is there any way to save the file in rev 16 so the rev. 14 can open it?

RE: Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

i dont think that you can open a r5v16 file to a much lower version r5v14. you can save your file on another format rather.<step, iges, and so on>.then tell your teacher to open the file on the same format..

RE: Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

Oh yes you can. You can file parts back down to V5R6. Select the Tools drop down menu, then Utility. Select the Utilities tab and you'll see Downward Compatibility, double click this and a window will pop up to allow you to select the file you want to convert and also the release you want to convert back down to.

RE: Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

thanks for the correction.but what would be the extension of the file being save?...xml?

RE: Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

The models will be un-parametric and what's the point of e-mailing your teacher a dead solid.
It won't prove that you have learned something would it?

RE: Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

It will be the same as whatever the source file is e.g .CATPart .CATProduct all you're doing is changing the revision compatibility of the file not the type.

RE: Opening Catia 5.16 files in 5.14

Although, when it's said and done, it's hardly worth the trouble of going through the motions, most of the time.  I find it more worhtwhile to just save it in a neutral format, (STEP, if you have it) read it into the lower version, and save as a new file.  That downward compatibility thing is a pain in the rear, and generates too many reports and temp files. (garbage)

I used to think that the downward compatibility was a great thing.  These days, I'm finding it to be basically worthless.  Anybody else agree, or am I missing the bigger picture?
