Forged Aluminum 7075 Alloy at T, lookin for T7352

Forged Aluminum 7075 Alloy at T, lookin for T7352

(OP)
We have ordered a large forged aluminum billet that will be used to machine a component. We usually order thick plate for our components at the requested temeper but due to the size of the component we were recomended to get a forged billet close to the components final dimensions.

The billet comes in an T configuration in order to make it easier to machine. The question is can we temper the component after it has been machined to get the properties of a T7351 or T7352 temper?

Is the process the same, solution heat treat and then stabilized?

thanks

RE: Forged Aluminum 7075 Alloy at T, lookin for T7352

The process is solution treat (860-900 F), quench (140-160 F), stress relieve by cold compressing 1 to 3%, precipitation treat (also called aging or artificial aging) at 225 F for 6-8 hours, then age at 350 F for 6-8 hours.  You should review ASTM B 918 for specifics.  There is a note explaining that the 7xxx series require very good process control in order to produce the required properties.  If this is an aerospace application, then you will need to obtain SAE AMS 2772 and follow its requirements.

Your problem will be the (1 to 3) % compression.  This is easy to do to a sheet/plate, but difficult to do with a shape.
