MS Word, AutoCAD, DWGeditor

This only peripherally pertains to this forum, but I thought someone here might have run into this.

Have many Word docs with embedded AutoCAD drawings in them. If we need to edit, we can double-click the drawing and AutoCAD will open. We can edit, save, and all is good.

I have a new machine, and primarily run SolidWorks. SolidWorks comes with a dwg-compatible application called DWGeditor, so I haven't installed AutoCAD. If I double-click on an AutoCAD graphic in Word, I get a "can't find that application" error. Tried to convert within Word, but there don't seem to be many options.

So, the question is: Is there any reasonable way to tell Word to open these AutoCAD objects in DWGeditor? I've posted this same question in the SolidWorks forum.

RE: MS Word, AutoCAD, DWGeditor

This is a Windows / Linux / OS thing.  You need to associate DWGeditor with DWG files.  This is often done when software is installed but perhaps DWGeditor did not do this.  DWGeditor may have a setting somewhere for it.  Otherwise, for Windows, go Start/Control Panel/Folder Settings, choose the File Types tab find and change the program assigned to dwg files or add the dwg file and association.

I don't think this is the problem. If I view a .dwg file in the Windows Explorer, it shows up as a DWGeditor file. So, Windows knows how to open them. The problem seems to be with Word. How can I tell Word to open the .dwg image with this replacement program?

RE: MS Word, AutoCAD, DWGeditor

If it was inserted as an AutoCAD file, I'm not sure how to get Word to use DWGeditor.  Does it work if you insert a drawing as a DWGeditor object?

Yes, it probably does, although I haven't tried it. The problem is that I have a lot of old Word docs that have AutoCAD objects inserted into them, and I can't seem to find a way to be able to edit them with my replacement program.
