MS Word, AutoCAD, DWGeditor

This only peripherally pertains to this forum, but I thought someone here might have run into this.

Have many Word docs with embedded AutoCAD drawings in them. If we need to edit, we can double-click the drawing and AutoCAD will open. We can edit, save, and all is good.

New machine, trying to get out from under AutoCAD licensing, so no AutoCAD is installed. If I double-click on an autocad graphic in Word, I get a "can't find that application" error. Tried to convert within Word, but there don't seem to be many options.

So, the question is: Is there any reasonable way to tell Word to open these AutoCAD objects in DWGeditor (that comes with SW)?

RE: MS Word, AutoCAD, DWGeditor

RMB on a DWG file & change the application to open it with.

cheers

CBL:

Not sure I understand the details. I can't do this in Word; that gives me a Word popup menu that includes things like "unknown object..." and "show picture toolbar", but no way to change the application.

If I RMB on a file in Windows Explorer, and choose "Open With...", it already says DWGeditor. So, Windows knows how to open .dwg files, but Word doesn't seem to know to make that mapping. Appears as though "autocad.exe" is embedded in the Word doc somehow. That's what I need to get at and change.

RE: MS Word, AutoCAD, DWGeditor

I believe Windows will default to whatever the "associated" program is.  Even if you change this later via "Open With" I think somewhere in your registry these are still considered AutoCad files first and DWGeditor files second.

I would try re-installing DWGeditor and telling it to associate with these files by default, although the option may be in AutoCAD somewhere too.

RE: MS Word, AutoCAD, DWGeditor

Sorry, I gapped on the 'embedded' bit. I had a quick look but could not see anything obvious.

You might have better luck asking over on the Tek_Tips forums.
