Book Recommendations

(OP)
I'm looking for a good reference book on different material properties (yield, tensile, etc...) as well as typical applications.

Can anyone recommend a book?

RE: Book Recommendations

There are books out called "materials Handbooks"

The Clark & Varney metallurgy text is excellent if you are looking for general information about materials and heat treatment. It is an engineering text but it is not difficult to read.

RE: Book Recommendations

I get a lot of basic info from suppliers catalogs such as McMaster or MSC they cover any material you can buy from them and don't generaly cost you anything.

RE: Book Recommendations

Handbook of Materials for Product Design (3RD) (2001) is available for the extremely low price of $7.75 + s/h.

Only ~1000 pages, so rather brief on processes.  But, lots of cheap "Manufacturing Processes" textbooks  are available.  And, auto engineers presumably already have Machinery's Handbook.

For metals, I recommend Physical Metallurgy Handbook (2003) http://www.campusi.com/bookFind/asp/bookFindPriceLst.asp?prodId=0070579865
and Smithells Metals Reference Book (1992 or newer) http://www.campusi.com/bookFind/asp/bookFindPrefindLst.asp?srchBy=title&;srchTxt=smithells+metals+reference+book

I heartily concur with carnage1's recommendation of www.mcmaster.com.  It has a good search engine, so you can browse by material, application or specification.  Nice to find what is available, do-able, what specs. apply, etc.  Do a trial search for 'ASTM screws,' then click on Hex Head & Cap Screws to see some of the available info.
