Roller Chain questions

Roller Chain questions

Roller Chain questions

(OP)
Coupla questions...
1) When drawing up some #41 chain sprockets; using Circular Pattern (under SketchTools) for the tooth profile, how can you select using windowing? Seems it only allows picking one entity at a time to add to the items to pattern.

2) Is it possible to show simulation of roller chain about two sprockets? (ie chain links changing from circular movement to linear, and cycling)

Thnx, Gatz

RE: Roller Chain questions

1)  You're better off making a solid and patterning the solid rather than patterning the sketch.  So make an X degree slice of the sprocket, usually just 1/2 of a tooth and 1/2 of the trough next to it, make it solid, and then mirror, and then pattern the mirror.

2)  It's possible, but I think it might take you a week of doing mates in a chain with a couple hundred links (2 mates per link).  You might be able to simplify it using flexible subassemblies and using a few links together as a sub assembly, but flex subassemblies are sometimes a little flaky.

Good luck,

matt

RE: Roller Chain questions

Can you wait until version 2007? (kidding)  I'm pretty sure 2007 will correctly simulate a roller chain about two pulleys/sprockets.

RE: Roller Chain questions

1) Firstly, to answer your question, clicking & holding, then dragging the cursor should create a selection rectangle.
However, rather than use the Sketch Tools - Circular Pattern, try creating one tooth, then using Features - Circular Pattern. When creating other configs or similar parts, it is easier to modify the feature pattern rather than the sketch pattern.
There are several ways to create the sprocket;
As per dezignstuffs post.
Create a circular disc & add the teeth to it.
Create a circular disc & cut the clearance for the chains rollers from it.

Whichever way you choose, it is usually better to make one tooth (or roller clearance) & pattern it as a feature.

2) Yes, it is possible, but it is long winded if done for a complete chain. SW07 will have a more automated chain/belt creation function.

cheers
