Video Card For dual use computer at home

I have a new home computer with a dual core processor but we use it as our main media computer- home movies, pictures ect... but sometimes i need to work on SW models at home. What is the best compromise for a video card for this situation. A GE FORCE card, FIre GL , ect.. My ocmputer at work has Quadro FX500, but this is not the best card for other uses. We do more consumer design and mold design. Never any assemblies. Thanks in advance

RE: Video Card For dual use computer at home

Rocko,

I built a dual core AMD system and also use it for a home theatre and for home SolidWorks use.  I choose the Geforce 6800 GT (PCIE).  It has dual monitor support and also and s-video out (for use with my projector).  Performance in SolidWorks is pretty good.  I don't do very large assemblies at home either and tend not to have a great deal of windows open in SolidWorks at any given time, so the multi-window slow down does not affect me.  I could care less about realview.  Not a bad card for a good price.

Pete

Your welcome... I believe Gildashard also uses the GeForce 6800 and is pleased with it for his SolidWorks use.

RE: Video Card For dual use computer at home

I believe the best option would be to make a dual boot system with a hacked set of proffesional drivers on the winxp installation you are going to use for sw.

I am using a ati 9800 card on my setup, and something called FreeFireGL wich is modified Firegl drivers that recognizes the 9800 card as a FireGL X2  card.  You might consider a 9800 AllInWonder, it has resonable 3D performance in games, wery good multimedia function and tv tuner ( with a radio remote control)  an quite good SW performance with modded drivers.

Check on this forum what cards can do the dual dance.

I think some nvidia 6800 flawours is the best option, but be careful that you get the right one.

Best of luck

i've had fairly good luck with using a geforce 6800gs. i use rivatuner and softquadro to trick it into a quadro. more info on softmodding and the software can be found at www.3dguru.com
