configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

(OP)
i have searched exhaustively for this topic. I actually want the reverse of every entry I have found.

I want the column header to only show the configuration name ie: -505|-504|-503|-502|-501| Item #| , instead of automatically placing |-505/QTY|-504/QTY| and so on...

i know i can select the column and just erase it, but that becomes a daunting task on a tabulated drawing where many configurations are displayed.

TIA

second part:

is there a way to have a specific size BOM where those configuration columns are blank if i am not using sevral config, but they will be populated if i am.

basically i want a standard template with say 10 columns linked to custom property data or configuration properties in my assembly. so that if i only have one config yawn01| i end up with 9 blank columns and a crrectly named -001 column. but if i have 10 configs, i just highlight them and the table is populated without changin size or adding additional columns.

again, thank you if anyone can help me!!!!

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

I have a standard part with multiple configurations. We used to use AutoCad & had one drawing with a huge BOM that listed every "size" for this part (aka. "tabulated"). Then I made thw switch to SolidWorks. I have one part file with multiple configurations... probably the same idea as you.

Now you have 2 options:

1 - I set up my drawing so that I can open it, select the proper conviguration, then print. The new drawing BOM only lists the material for the required size. Simple & not cluttered with "extra" information.

2 - Make one part file (with multiple configurations) & maintain a single drawing for each configuration. Consider how often you might revise this standard part & how many drawings you then want to correct & check.

The moral of this story... "Tabulated" drawing are bad. I'd personally rather take a beating... daily.

well, this is a tabulated drawing for an assembly. not a single part. in my case i am showing an assembly with several configurations. i cant really do separate drawings because the customer requires as few part numbers as possible. so, they go to dash numbers. now my drawing needs a BOM on the face listing each assembly dash number and a "tabulation" showing which configuration uses what parts and how many of each.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

My "method" should still work for assembly files too...

Im my mind... a separate configuration needs a unique part number. Does your customer want to see all the configurations together on the same drawing?

Let me contemplate this for a while...

Change the TABLE PROPERTIES, BOM TYPE to PARTS ONLY...
Is that what you want?

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

(OP)
Tate,

Yes they want to see 1 assembly part number. Lets say paret number 12345. but 12345 is a common assembly used in several applications where lets say some hardware (permanent non-removable) is different to install that assemby. so when assembling this unit, if the project calls for a dash -501, they use "A" hardware, or if they are building for project #2 they use the "B" hardware according the drawing.

rather than have two part numbers, they want to see 12345 as the drawing, and a tabulated parts list showing those configs, lets say a (12345)-501 and a (12345)-502 in column would be listed the quantities required to build each different assembly, either a 12345-501 or a 12345-502 depending on what items are used to build it based from the parts list.

i can scan a small sample if necessary to show you what i mean.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

I'm beginning to get the picture...
How about amending the -501 to the drawing number in the title block? So now you have a seperate drawing for each configuration. Drawing 12345-501 or 12345-502. It's still just one assebly file & one drawing file (much easier to maintain)... even if you print one copy of each config... techincally still one part number.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

(OP)
UNFORTUNATELY, MILITARY WONT DO IT THAT WAY. THEY WANT THE DRAWING TO SHOW THE NUMBER....oops, sorry. they want the drawing to be the number, 12345, then the parts list shows that the "part" is a 12345-501, and if it has mult. configs, then add 12345-502 to FOD. then parts list will show those 2 dash numbers.

its kind of goofy and i cant make solidworks do what i want in way that i will end up saving time and have the same parts list, the format i mean and the fact that its populated from custom properties,  across all the assemblies/assembly drawings in this project.

i am stumped and have a huge headache from these damn templates and custom properties, blah blah.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

Just curious ... what's wrong with having the "/QTY." showing?

cheers

badfysh,
Can you show a screen shot of your BOM?

this is an example of an assembly that has only one config. but it shows the format they want. the blank columns would hold the next config, -502, -503, etc.

i doesnt need ****/QTY because the box underneath says "QTY REQD PER DASH NO."

so, if my assembly had a -501 and a -502, how do i have a template that always looks like that parts list, but populates the fields based on my configs?

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

Is the row "parts list" and "qty ... " part of the BOM? If so, try removing it and make it part of the dwg format. The BOM template will not include it.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

(OP)
no, that row is in the sheet format.

SW wont allow you to make a merged cell in a template. it allows it but then when you insert the template, it doesnt recognize the merge and you get a messed up parts list.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

(OP)
i suppose i should be more clear on that last point. you can merge the cell. but i needed to make a template. and once you "save as template", the merge goes away and it return the original cells and keep the data from the uppermost furthest left cell of whichever cells you merged. so just added that row to the sheet format as a block so users can add it at will on assembly drawings.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

(OP)
ok. i have received approval to make the parts list the the way SW can do it, ie: no blank columns. if configs are present and toggled on, then that column will be added and the user will have go in and delete the QTY from that title. this means that drawings will have varying size parts lists depending on how many configurations. we are going to present to the customer that way, unfortunately we know that they are very picky about things like this, they want uniformity. so ultimately we may have to just enter those columns manually unless you guys can figure out a workaround within SW.

thanks for the time i appreciate the help and i will keep checking in case something comes up to solve the issue i am having.

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

badfysh ... Time to upgrade!

SW2006 has a Don't add "QTY" next to configuration name option.

cheers

RE: configurations in BOM...PLEASE EXPERT HELP

if you CAN'T upgrade...try highlighting the QTY. and over writing your spacebar. It will remove the "QTY." from the box and leave the -XXX
