invalid file type ? help

invalid file type ? help

invalid file type ? help

(OP)
Ok here goes nothing... I have a subassy which opens up fine on one computer with no issues.  When trying to open the same sub assy on a differnt computer solidworks returns a "invalid file type" dialouge box and will not open the file.  This really confuses me ??? They only differnt between the machines is that one is on sw 2006 sp3.1 and the other is still at 2006 sp 0.0  I am upgrading the 0.0 pathch right now but I'm not convinced this is the problem ?  Any insight is great.

RE: invalid file type ? help

Both PC's need to be the same SP, (3.1).
Same as you can't open 06 files in 05.

RE: invalid file type ? help

Typically you don't have issues opening files created by different service packs as long as it's the SAME YEAR. But, SP3.1 is only for Chinese SW, see thread559-145426.

ctopher... i didn't I'm pretty sure both computer don't have to be the same sp .. just the same version ie sw2005 or sw2006.. correct me if i'm wrong.

RE: invalid file type ? help

smcadman,

3.1 is the only available Service Pack.  What SW meant was if you had upgraded to SP 3.0 you did not have to upgrade to SP 3.1 unless you were using the Chinese version of SW.

RE: invalid file type ? help

yep i can open other parts and assy's on both machines with no issues. I talked to my solidworks rep and he suggested clean out that machines temp files which i have done but it has not helped the situation.

RE: invalid file type ? help

Run a Repair/Modify on the computer that will not open the file. Also if either of those don't work, look at the ALternative reinstall in the FAQ here.

RE: invalid file type ? help

Try SBaughs suggestions first. If that doesn't work, try sequentially opening each component in the problem assy.

If you find one that will not open, investigate it for abnormalities.

Does the sub-assy (or its components) have any unusual features, patterns, etc?

cheers
