Help creating surface

(OP)
Hello, 1st time here. About a year ago I started on NX2 and recently have been working on NX3. My tasks mostly involve updating and designing fixtures, jigs and die components.
Today I needed to create an insert, 40mmx150mm with a "dome" of 10mm in height. I never have had a need to create this type of feature and need a push in the right direction. Thanks to all who may help

RE: Help creating surface

I might be thinking too simple here but cant you revolve a section?

RE: Help creating surface

in NX3, you can create a solid by revolving 360 degrees the "outside edge" or profile line of your "dome" around its central axis.  Create a sketch of the dome's profile on a plane perpendicular to the dome's base, exit the sketch, then revolve the sketch about an axis coincident with the dome's centerline.

RE: Help creating surface

also, if you actually just want a surface and not a solid of the dome, you can use a trick:

create the revolution, but only an amount <360 degrees (ie: 355 degrees).  If the profile is an open section, this will cause the revolve to produce a surface, not a solid.  Then go back and re-define the angle to be a full 360.  Now, you have a revolved surface...

RE: Help creating surface

If you only need a surface body, you could also change the modeling preferences body type from "body" to "sheet" and change them back when you have your surface.  This guarantees a continuous surface.

RE: Help creating surface

abeschneider,

Or you can change the modeling preference to output a sheet body, perform the revolve, then change the preference back to solid body. (in modeling preferences)

I beat you to it cowski!

Thanks to those who contributed. It appears that I will be spending sometime on "cast" to learn a few new skills.
Again, thank you!

'doh!
