(OP)
I observed at the supermarket that the fruits e.g. oranges
are picked in each year in a less ripe condition.
Well, "orange" presently denotes both the fruit and the color.
In a few more years will we call that virulent green
color orange or that spongy and tasteless fruit "green" ?

RE: coming color confusion
We Americans want our produce picture perfect without blemish even to the point of sacrificing taste. Since life is so short once ripe, this is the only way to do it.
But that's no substitute for fruits and veggies that ripen on the plant the way Mother Nature intended. Buy your produce from a local farmer or farmers market when possible for real quality.

For some it was only a matter of weeks before they passed their sell-by dates, but for others it is a matter of a year or more.
The more one learns about food storage, handling and preparation, the more one begins to wonder how we are all still alive.
My favourite was a visit to a pork pie factory where the workers warned me never to eat a pork pie again.... when they explained what really went into a pork pie I took their advise.

That depends on what they are to be used for. Florida oranges are uglier and more thin skinned than those from California, making them hard to peel. The juice, depending on the weather as you pointed out, can be excellent. Most Florida oranges are used for juice.

Which came first? Orange the color, or orange the fruit? Were oranges called that because they were orange, or was the color named after the fruit?
I like Rick's phrasing better.
RE: coming color confusion
Orange is orange because oranges are orange.
Prior to oranges being discovered in the New World the colour was called geoluhread (yellow-red)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange
I’d have guessed the other way around since orange existed in the Old World before oranges were discovered in the New World.
In any case makes for good coffee break talk.

There are several made up words that rhyme and some close if you slightly mispronounce one or more of them.
It is the most common word in the English language that does not have a rhyme.
That’s according to the link I posted above.

Other words supposedly unable to be rhymed are Silver, Purple and Month. But that depends on the rule you apply to a rhyming word. Does it have to rhyme with the majority of the word (e.g. Silver -> ilver, Purple -> urple, Month -> onth), or just the last syllable only? (e.g. Silver -> ver, Purple -> ple).
Orange you glad you asked?

oh and also I stole this off the web:
There once was a man from Fort Orange
Who longed to make rhymes using "orange".
He gave up in despair,
Hung himself in midair,
Where he swings to and fro like a door-'inge.
