HELP MOVING OBJECTS FROM ONE DRAWING TO ANOTHER

HELP MOVING OBJECTS FROM ONE DRAWING TO ANOTHER

HELP MOVING OBJECTS FROM ONE DRAWING TO ANOTHER

(OP)
Im trying to make evacuation maps for the hospital I work at. Since I only need certain sections of the hospital for the maps I am copying parts from one file to the new one. When I paste the objects into the new file all of the layer info from the old file is brought over. So I move all of the objects to one layer and try to get rid of the old layers I don't need. But it wont let me. Also if I go and shut off the layer with the objects on it, everything disappears.. but yet I can still select the objects even though they are not visible. How do I get rid of the layers I don't want? Please help.. its really annoying to have all these layers I don't need. Makes things confusing.

RE: HELP MOVING OBJECTS FROM ONE DRAWING TO ANOTHER

code blue,
Be sure you 'explode' the part(s) you copy to your new drawing.  Otherwise, they will be a unit block, and the old layers will remain.

Also, you could draw a line on each layer you wish to delete and the go to EXPRESS>LAYERS>LAYER DELETE and select the lines you have just drawn.  Say yes to all the prompts.  This will remove all the layers you wish and update the blocks at the same time.

RE: HELP MOVING OBJECTS FROM ONE DRAWING TO ANOTHER

when you bring it into your new drawing it will appear as one big block and it will look like it is on a certain layer, but once you explode it, it will throw everything back to it's original layers.  After you explode it, then you can change everything to one layer and delete unwanted ones.

RE: HELP MOVING OBJECTS FROM ONE DRAWING TO ANOTHER

If the objects are blocks in the new drawing, then you will need to explode them. If they are not then you will not need to explode them. Copyclip and Pasteclip will work great to copy objects from drawing to drawing, you can also drag and drop from drawing to drawing.

RE: HELP MOVING OBJECTS FROM ONE DRAWING TO ANOTHER

If you are using AutoCad Release 12 you can copy and paste back into your drawings at the same coordinates. Unfortunately later releases set the insertion coordinates at the nearest point to the selected entities in the origional drawing.
Once inserted, the drawing will be a block of the active layer in the new drawing. You can explode this layer to edit it or you can leave it as a block.
Remember to use the default scale for the insertion. You can also insert using the insert command or make a block using the wblock command.
Check your help files for the best method.
