Laser Welding Thin Plastic

Laser Welding Thin Plastic

Laser Welding Thin Plastic

(OP)
Hi,

I'm doing research on using either a CO2 or YAG laser to weld two layers of .001" HDPE and form a heat seal around a small, flexible part.  I had the idea of applying a small bit of pressure to the top layer of HDPE with a block of zinc selenide to hold the plastic and part flat, and then aiming a CO2 beam through the ZnSe to weld.

I am quite new to the idea of welding.  Do I need to leave open space at the site of the weld for any material or gasses to escape, or can I bring the ZnSe directly into contact with the material that is being welded?

Power should not be more than about 100W and the total perimeter of the weld is only a few inches per part.  Temperature to weld will be about 150 deg. C

Thanks!

Adam
