Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Good morning, I have a fully constraind feature, a hollow arrow with the letters FLO in it, basically a small flow stamp.  It is on a plane and I would like to wrap it on a cylinder, but it fails everytime.  I have used wrap with pure text and that works, but as soon as the arrow comes into the picture it fails.  Am I doing something wrong here?  Any ideas?  I would eventually like to put this in a library, because I have to put this on hundred of parts.  Thank you in advance for any help or ideas.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

You cannot use wrap with a sketch that has a mix of sketch entites and true type font entities. although you can do one wrap with the boss-in and the letting boss-out.

Thank you for the response,Luca.  If I understand you, it can not be done.  Wonderful.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Im sorry, I ment you can except entities or TTF that use double nested contours.... Like zeros, O's and P's.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Thanks again for the response.   I am fairly new at SW and I am not understanding what you are trying to say.  I have a half dozen lines around the letters FLO and it looks like an arrow and I used the same lettering that I used to wrap regular text.  I don't even know if I could put this into a library and still wrap it onto a cylinder, because there are literally hundreds of these part that need to be marks with the directionaly flow.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

The problem is that with three-deep layers of lines--arrow edge, outer O edge, inner o edge--you've created an ambiguity for Solidworks--a logical dilemma.  Which side of which lines will be extruded as solid and which will not?

To fix this, try doing this in two steps.  The first is to use lines to form your arrow (convert the entities from your first "master" sketch that you already have).  Extrude and wrap the arrow only.  Then do the same for your text (except you will probably need to cut your text into your new arrow instead of extrude it.

Thank you for the response, Jeff.  I understand what you are saying, but I don't understand how I am going to put the letters inside the arrow?  Next qustion, do I use two separate library objects as well?  Can I even use the library for this?  Like I said, there are hunf\dreds of these thins.  Thanks.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Well, that was a waste of time, the second wrap failed.  I creat a new plane, for the arrow, and fully constranded it and then I successfully wrapped it.  I then suspended everything and repeated for the text.  It wrapped successfully and then I unsuspended the first wrap and then it failed, "Wrap failed, could not use any contour(s) from scketch."  Any suggestions at this point will be deeply appreachiated.  Thanks.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Why did you "suspend" (I assume you mean "supress") the first wrap feature?

Can you show images of what you are trying to do? FAQ559-1100

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Have the arrow and the text on separate sketches thru the center of the part. Wrap them separately.
(If I understand you correctly)

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Right--that was my intention.

One would be an extruded solid feature, the other an extruded cut feature.

Use the same original sketch and merely convert entities of the arrow in the first sketch and extrude, and the text in the second sketch and extruded cut.  Should be fairly simple.

You may need to Cut Up To Surface for your text cut--meaning you'll need to define a stopping point for your cut by identifying a surface (not sure if the wrap feature will allow this).

In the worst-case scenario, do all this as a single operation.  Convert the text to non-text entities inside the arrow, and change the inner o lines to construction lines.  Add the cut for the inner o as a separate cut operation.  This will work fine, too.

Ok I think here is the image:

Yes they were total separate in this version and yes I tried them as on also and one then then modified it with a second wrap and then this way with the first wrap supressed.  I have tried it every way imaginable.  And still nothing.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Thanks, dgowans.  That is it, but I have not got it working in my little part.  On dumb question here, can this be used with a library, so it can be recalled?  Thanks again.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

I've not done much with library parts/features.  Not sure how you would specify the face upon which to wrap.  Once you get it working you could always use your sketch as a library feature, I think.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Thanks again for the info.  Now all I have to do is get this to work like yours.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

guest4k,

After the initial revolve, I created Sketch2 (be aware of the fact that the lines making up the arrow are construction lines).

I then created Sketch4 and converted the arrow entities (not as construction geometry).  Wrap1 was created with Sketch4.

Finally, Wrap2 was created with Sketch2.  Hope this helps.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Thanks again, but that is what I am trying, with very little success, to do.  I think I will go out and get a very stiff drink.  Wishfull thinking .

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Can you upload a file that we can poke at?  Sometimes the best solution to a problem is another set of eyes......

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Glad to, but how do I do that?

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

guest4k,

Try putting your sketched arrow and text on your CL plane.  The wrap features worked for me when I did this.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Thanks again, but coincident8 in sketch7 is "suppose" to be to the CL.  I tried a couple of things to get the text onto the CL, but then I can not get it back inside the arrow.  I did take a clas in this, but those people don't know what they are doing.  So I am learnign this on my own and with a little help from the people here.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Put your sketches on the center PLANE and constrain to the centerline.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Thanks, I will try it, but is there a way to move the sketches from one plne to another, without redrawing them?

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

Expand the feature tree, expand the wrap feature, RMB on the sketch, Edit sketch plane, pick the desired plane.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Ok, dumb question time, how do I contrain text to the CL?  It still is not working.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

There is an insertion point in the text (usually at the bottom LH corner) which can be dimensioned to.

Take a look at how this was done - you had some unnecessary construction geometry in there which may have been a source of confusion.

To your last question, CBL is correct, you can dimension to the sketch point.  You had specified a sketch line in your text which controlled the position of the text.

RE: Wrap Won't Wrap a Featureon a Cylinder

(OP)
Well, for what it is worth I did find the insertion point.  Added some dimensionms and promptly got the old wrap bomb.  Besides shooting it, and suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Think I won't press my luck, so I will go out and have a beer to celebrate, the dang thing finally worked.  For my next magic trick, I think I will try and put it in a library.  Thanks for all of the help, it is deeply appreciated.
