Anyone can shed some light on this. What sort of reciprocating mechanism does this, pulling the slide in and out of the tray while advancing to the next one.

I think I can use the principle of this old device to do the same function for my design. Just didn't quite get it yet.

The slides drop out of the tray utilizing gravity - that may or may not rule it out for you.

Slide projectors are available cheap at second-hand stores, garage sales and such.

Buy one and take it apart.

I was searching for a second hand projector..for some reason I couldn't find any.

never disassembled one, but I think it has to do with "Geneva wheel".
