calculating bolt loads

calculating bolt loads

calculating bolt loads

(OP)
hi
does anyone know how to evaluate analitically the forces acting on a bolt set, under mechanical and thermal loads. I need a method other than FEM
thanks

RE: calculating bolt loads

Shigleys Book on Mechanical Engineering
Design has all of the info that you need.
This is costly, you might want to check it out at
a local technical library.  It is worth the
money and would answer many of the questions
that appear on several of these forums.
The thermal aspect, I am not certain that I
understand your request.  If both part and
bolt are similar metals and the temperatures
rise in both, then the rates of expansion would
be the same.  If you are talking about installing
bolts by heating them, then you do have to know
the thermal expansion of the bolts to determine
the preload after installation.  i.e., you must
determine how much stretch that is resulting from
the heated bolts returning to normal.

RE: calculating bolt loads

I found the book
"An Introduction to the Design and Behavior of Bolted Joints" By John H. Bickford to the the best reference I have seen.

RE: calculating bolt loads

I'm interested in determining analytically (other than by FEM) the mounting pressure due to the clamping loads of a bolt SET (i.e., not a single bolt).
