Dog names

(OP)
On Sunday we will be picking up our new puppy.  We will be getting a female Golden Retriever.  Our previous one passed away in '04 from a brain tumor.  We are having a heck of a time coming up with a name.  I thought it would be nice to have something unusual, like and engineering term, instead of a boring "human" name.  Both my husband and I are engineers, he an Electrical and me a Structural.  Since most of you seem to have such great screen names, I thought you could help me out with some ideas.

Thanks.

RE: Dog names

If I get another dog it will be named "STAY!" just to watch the reaction when you call the dog....

I always thought it would be cool to have a pair of pets named Thomas and Finney, or Halliday and Resnick.  Or Beer and Johnson, but those are too easily misinterpreted.

Well,  a few structural dog names:

1.  Kip (as in kilo-pounds)
2.  Fazler (after Fazler Khan - the great structural engineer)
3.  Eiffel (after Gustav the french guy)
4.  Schematic (I don't know... just like it)
5.  A36  (a weird name for a dog - but a classic)
6.  Charpy (for the V-notch toughness test)
7.  Electrode (for welding and/or electrical stuff)

RE: Dog names

I like golden retrievers.  they seem like about the most generic dog in existence, though.

How about Generica?

RE: Dog names

I heard somewhere that if nature takes its course without deliberate breeding, the generic dog is a "yalla dog" not entirely unlike a small yellow lab.

RE: Dog names

(OP)
TheTick,

You are right, Golden's have become very popular in the last few years.  I think in large part not only due to their good temperment, but also due to the popularity and abundance of all those "Airbud" movies.  As a result, we had been warned that many new dogs were suffering from what was being termed "Golden Retriever Rage."  Irresponsible breeders, having a disregard for the physical and mental health of the dogs, were overbreeding or in-breeding their dogs.  The result was a dog who seemed to exhibit all the loveable and desireable traits of a GR, but would become aggressive for little or no reason.

Even more disturbing than the "yalla dog" is the insurgence of new mixed breeds like the "Golden Doodle" (Golden Retriever/Poodle.)  People are doing that stuff on purpose!

RE: Dog names

speaking of "designer mutts," have you seen the Puggle (pug/beagle) or labradoodle (lab / poodle)?

RE: Dog names

I don't really have any ideas for you but I will suggest that you can do a search on Dogster for goldens to see what others have done.  We did this when we got our second border collie and it helped get the ol' creative juices going.

Best dog name I've heard was a dalmation in college named 'Stripe'.

RE: Dog names

(OP)
Ivymike,
Who thinks of that stuff?

PsionSaint,
Stripe is a great name.  I thought we could rely on our 5 year old for some innovative ideas.  His stuffed animals have some really great names.  He has a dalmation beany baby he got when he was 3, he named it "beef."  When I ask if he's come up with any ideas, he sighs loudy (as if I've told him to go clean his room) and tells me no.  Of course, he also shoots down almost every name I come up with.

RE: Dog names

How about naming the dog after WOMEN engineers?  After all it is a female puppy.

THEANO (mathmetician and wife of Pythagorus) or

LILLIAN, after Lillian Gilbreth, member #1 in the Society of Women Engineers.

or there are other alternatives like

BITUMEN (pronounced Bitch-oo-men) it's not a bad word in the dog world

SHEBOLT (construction, a type of form tie) or,

YELLOWCAKE (nuclear)

RE: Dog names

I had a cockapoo once (cocker spaniel-poodle mix). Kids can get creative with names, I remember a german shepard my parents let me name.  I chose Lizard.

Of those presented here, I like Eiffel, Charpy and Girdy.

If it was a smaller dog, like a Jack Russel, Rivet might have been nice.  I respect Golden's, so I can't think of any interesting names.

RE: Dog names

We have a Bichon Frise at home as our family pet. He really is a rather gentle dog and is a male, about 8 years old. You have to understand that I have a family of women (wife plus two daughters -21 and 19) at home so I appreciate the (any) male companionship.

I was tasked with coming up with a name. So after a few beers, I came up with "Junior" (Jr). Jr being with women most of the day at home initially seemed to develop bathroom habits outdoors like squatting instead of lifting either back leg. Well, after my job of walking the dog each night, over time he started to lift his hind leg. Absolutely fantastic, finally a male dog with measurable testosterone levels. Now, after eight years he grunts and waits for me to take him out for our evening walk together.

Last but not least, I was on business travel several years ago and my wife took Jr for his grooming. Well, when I returned in the evening, I noticed that he didn’t greet me at the door for our walk. As it turned out, he had a blue bow placed on each ear by the dog groomer and my wife did not attempt to remove them thinking they were cute - what an embarrassment. After I removed them, it took about two days and Jr got back to his old male tendencies.

My previuos dog was an Akita that we got from a University research program that bred them for genetic defects and farmed them out to families for ong term studies. They told us we were getting a male, but when we got it home I discovered she was a female. So we named her Lola (after the Kinks song). Don't ask me why the University students couldn't tell the difference.

I once had a dog that was mostly white with a big brown spot that surrounded one eye so I named him "Bozo" (as in the clown.)

He was a good dog, loyal, teachable.  Sitting right there watching me cut down a tree when the tree fell on him.  Learned a sad lesson that day.

Metengr, dittos except 3 daughters.  They got a puppy once that they needed to name, and since there was 3 of them, and they couldn't agree on any names I made each of them put 3 names in a hat, and rule was that the one drawn was it-no questions asked, no second takes.

Well, one of them put "Elvis" in the hat, and guess what-I think Elvis needs to be fed.  The daughters are all gone, but Elvis is still with us.  It was the male gerbil that I really bonded with when we had him.  But he lived indoors in this harem with me.  Elvis lives outside.

TheTick,

I would have to agree with you on the name thing.  Our first dog was named Josephine.  At the time my nieces and nephews were about 3 years old and when they said it, it sounded like Jobean.  She would also respond to Jo, Bean, Beaner, Pumpkin Head (she was a dark Golden)and Baby Girl.  As long as somebody was petting her, she didn't care what you called her.

RE: Dog names

Had a black lab mix named "Buddy" (he was my dog as a bachelor).  Got married, wife wanted a "lap dog", so her mother got us a Boston Terrier.  Cute dog, but mean as a snake to Buddy!  Had a rough few months, but they learned to peacefully co-exist for 10+ years!  Boston was named Vito (as in Vito Corleone...it's an Italian thing!)

Both went to that big kennel in the sky this past year!  Probably won't see more dogs in my house until the kids get bigger.

So what's disturbing about it, anyway?  Fewer jobs for vets due to reduced occurrence of genetically defective purebreds?

RE: Dog names

(OP)
Ok, so maybe "disturbing" was the wrong word to use.  I guess it's more of the surprise of seeing a mixed breed that wasn't half dog "X", half sneaky neighbors dogsmile  Mixed breeds can be very good dogs.  My brother has a mixed breed dog and she's wonderful.
Like you said, combining traits of more than one breed can result in better temperament and better health.  However, responsible pure breeding can also accomplish this.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of irresponsible people out there who breed their dog because they think it would be "fun" and those who allow their dog to be bred or to breed (from not spaying or neutering).  A good majority of those dogs are unwanted and never find good homes.
I guess most established breeds today have come about due to selective mixed breeding.  As engineers we all know how important it is to get the background and facts on a project, understand the desired results, make a plan, etc.  It takes experience and knowledge of the subject to be successful.

RE: Dog names

Growing up, my mother had a Maltese (small dust mop breed) male that we kept as a pet because he was too short for show quality. We named him Jason because Jason and the Golden Fleece had just come out in theaters that year, so we named him "Jason with the Golden Fleas" as a joke on the AKC registration papers.

Our neighbor had a champion Golden Lab bitch who had won several hunting trophies etc. etc. He was very selective about breeding her and paid handsomely for stud services from other champions, so her pups were very valuable. One year when she came into heat Jason got under the fence. The neighbor killed him, but apparently after he got to her, because all of her pups came out as short little Golden/Maltese mixes (Goldmalt? Maltlab?) Anyway, he killed all but one of the pups and gave it to us as a replacement for our dog that he had killed.

Jason Jr. had the face, body shape and coat of a Golden Lab, but the short little legs of the Maltese! Funny looking does not begin to do him justice as a description. His body was way too long for those short little legs, so watching him run was hilarious. Great dog though, and he lived almost 20 years, unheard of for a Lab.

I'm not too fond of folks who let their unneutered dogs roam, either.

RE: Dog names

Most normal people can see the difference between "letting the dog roam" and "the dog got out".

Hg

Eng-Tips policies:  FAQ731-376

RE: Dog names

I've had to address the painful (and expensive) reality of the duality of "dogs is family" and "dogs is property".

A dog unsuitable for breeding should be neutered.  End of story.  People who think neutering is "wrong" or "unnatural" probably should also be neutered.

Neutered doggy would not sneak through fence for roll in hay.  Unneutered doggy will stop at nothing:  fence, traffic, children...

Then again, leaving a bitch in heat unattended outdoors, even in fenced area, is simply careless.  Again, because unneutered doggy will stop at nothing.  Experienced breeder should know this.

Personally, I would not have the heart to kill a whole litter.  I am certain I would hold papa doggy's family fully responsible, both financially and for all time and effort required to find homes for puppies.

RE: Dog names

TheTick,
While I wholeheartedly agree with you now, this took place in 1959, and neutering was not something that was done as easily as it is now. In addition, we didn't let him roam, he dug under the fence in an area where my father obviously didn't think he could, and then again under the fence of the kennel in their yard. That's why I am now a big proponent on spaying and neutering, we are foolhardy to think we can control doggy (and kitty) lust!

Side note: Several decades later when this discharged his shotgun at a dog in the middle of the road with kids outside playing. Several kids were hit with over-spray. The police hauled him off to jail. Let's just say that he was less than rational all around.

I now have a purebred Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) named Matilda who is also unsuitable for show, and we had her spayed. She is way too smart however, and I have an annual budget item for gate lock systems because I have to keep changing them once she figures them out. She NEVER gives up! She also climbs trees, so I had to cut several down that were too close to the fences. When a dog wants freedom, it's hard to keep them home, spayed/neutered or not.

RE: Dog names

I don’t have any specific dog name suggestions but a couple of comments on pet names in general.

Stay away from using a human name for a pet. Most domestic dogs live 10 or more years. As soon as you name a dog “George” someone named George will move in next door and it can be confusing or embarrassing all around.

For dog obedience you should always call the dog’s name and then the command.  A short name with a hard sound works best to get the dog’s attention and then he will listen to the command.  Might not do anything about it but he will listen.

RE: Dog names

(OP)
At the eleventh hour our 5 year old chimed in and said he liked Gracie.  So that is what we named her.  She is so sweet and so cute.  I think God made her that way so I wouldn't kill her when she peed on the floor, even after we'd been outside for 20 minutessmile

The breeder we dealt with required we sign a "puppy contract."  This contract contained several clauses (don't worry we didn't agree to "inspect" or "guarantee" anything) which included one that we agreed to have her spade.  We also agreed that if we were unable to keep her for some reason, he would have first refusal.  He agreed he would take the dog back, for a full refund, if she develops hip-displaysia.

Very responsible guy, very knowledgeable and very experienced.  One of the puppies from every litter is donated to a sight assistance dog program.  I know it's impossible to have every breeder be so devoted to his dogs, but it does make you feel good to see it.

Gracie starts doggie daycare tomorrow.  She will be in a puppy potty training class for 4 weeks.  I am really looking forward to it.  The constant stress over the last two days of where she is and what she's doing are getting to me.

Thank you all for your suggestions and your time.

RE: Dog names

Enjoy your pup!  Gracie is a great name, and I'm sure somewhere out there is an engineer named Grace, whose friends call her Gracie.

I've got two dogs myself, but both were adopted at about 2 years old, so we never really got to enjoy the puppy stage.  On the flip side, we never had to deal with the puppy issues either.  Both were housetrained and well past the house-destroying age. Then again, they get a ton of exercise every day and I think they are glad to be left alone while we are at work.

Not a dog, but a cat.

A friend of mine loves cats but, alas, is allergic to them. Naturally she had to have one. It was called.......
You Bastard.

She would stand on the back steps at night at feeding time and call out to all and sundry in a loud and happy voice:

"You Bastard".

Of course, it could not last. She was muttering the cat's name in vain too often as the reactions irritated her more and more and the cat was 'let go' (to a new owner, she did, after all, love it).

My mouth dropped to the floor before I realized the dog's name was also Bella and was standing between us!!

RE: Dog names

(OP)
Our neighbors little girl is named Bella.

With the wild stuff people are naming their kids these days, I figured no name was safe in that respect.

She's a real sweetie, and since we got her tummy troubles figured out, she's even sleeping thru the night.  Six whole hours in a row!  Whoohoo, now if I can get my human kids to stop waking up.

RE: Dog names

I work with a guy whose name is "7".  Yes, the number "7", not spelled out.

He's about 30-35 years old.  Seinfeld had an episode where George wanted to name his kid "7".  This guy wrote to the show but never heard a word.
