Spell Checker

(OP)
The Google tool bar for internet browsers has a spell checker that works with the TGML editor.  If you would like more info, see the attached link.

RE: Spell Checker

I love it.  Just used it in the post about dog names.  It caught my misspelling of the word gerbil.

What I like is that it has other languages that I can now spell check in.

Sent an e mail to Spain yesterday that I had to compose in hotmail and after spell checking, copy and past into outlook.

I guess I could have composed it in Eng-tips.  I just fear hitting the submit button too soon if I did that.  (I have done that a few times, hit the submit button too soon.)

I recommend it highly.

RE: Spell Checker

I just got it too, works great. I had downloaded another one earlier and it was a dud, but this one works seamlessly. The only problem is that I tend to leave out letters because I don't hit the keys hard enough, and for some reason it misses a lot of those, even though they don't appear to be real words. One that came up tonight was 'tat' (instead of 'that'). I don't think 'tat' is a legitimate word, other than short for tattoo, but should that be in the dictionary?

LOL, I just checked this post and it accepted both of the above 'tat's!

tat=rubbish

also in "tit for tat" (well now we'll see who has what nanny software installed!)

RE: Spell Checker

Tatting is a method of making lace by hand. To tat, is to practice this art/craft.

RE: Spell Checker

Spell checkers are great but are not a cure all ---- due diligence is still needed.

The checkers will miss proper usage of words like "there", "their","they're" because each is spelled properly. A grammar/spell checker, like the one in MS Word is far more useful. Even with the grammar function due diligence is still required.

Spell checker and grammar checker will miss items like this one taken from a previous post in this thread.

"Sent an e mail to Spain yesterday that I had to compose in hotmail and after spell checking, copy and past into outlook."

The word past in this could be passed or pasted -- Don't mean to be critical of this post but this is a good example.

RE: Spell Checker

Grammar/spell checkers really amuse me when they discover badly spelled swear words.  They normally correct the spelling first and then advise against using the word.

RE: Spell Checker

Makes me wonder... any idea how MS makes the grammar checker work for each regional language setting? A spell checker for a different language requires just a different database, but I suppose the grammar checker would need completely different algorithms, depending on whether it's supposed to check English, French, Hungarian, Kantonese, Kyrgyzian or Swahili...
