wiring 220 volt single phase window air conditioners in iraq

(OP)
how do you wire a single phase 22o volt air/conditioner up to run properly in Iraq. over here all the voltage is on single line and the other two lines are netural and ground. there are 3 lines coming out of the A/C & heat unit.

RE: wiring 220 volt single phase window air conditioners in iraq

Hmmm that is tough from the info given.

Are you saying you have a North American A/C that you want to hook up?

Important questions:

1) Is the Iraqi power 50 Hertz or 60 Hertz?

2) What is the nameplate frequency?

3) What do the 'lines' go to inside the A/C unit?

Neutral?
Safety Ground?
Hot?
Line1?
Line2?
What? What?

RE: wiring 220 volt single phase window air conditioners in iraq

When I worked in Iraq in the late 70's the domestic power was (essentially) UK standard. 230/240V AC 50Hz as standard single phase. Connection via 3-pin plug Live, Neutral and Earth.

Good Luck

RE: wiring 220 volt single phase window air conditioners in iraq

If the power system is based on the UK system it is probably an MEN connection (Multiple Earth-Neutral) where the neutral line is connected to the earth at the power distribution box in the building.  The earth connection is NEVER to be used as a power return and is a safety ground only, connected to exposed metal parts of the appliance.

Therefore you have 2-wire power, line and neutral.

Usually coloured brown or red for line, Blue or black for neutral and green/yellow stripe or solid green for earth.

itsmoked's question on power frequency will have a bearing on how well an aircon will run though.  Iraq has 50Hz power so if you are using a 60Hz aircon it should be on a short power lead with minimum voltage drop as the motor will 16% slow as it is and have less starting torque.

RE: wiring 220 volt single phase window air conditioners in iraq

50Hz power on 60Hz gear will often cause failures.

More current + working harder + less cooling = smoke.

In Denmark Live is usually Black or Brown depending on which phase it is. Neutral is Blue. Earth is twisted Yellow/Green.

In older installations, however I have seen Black Neutrals, White Lives, and pure Yellow Earths as well. A bit confusing to say the least!
