2 Questions at assembly level

2 Questions at assembly level

(OP)
Question 1:

I am working on a simple assembly of 2 components.  One of the components is a sch80 pipe that I need to put a pipe tap hole in both sides.  Is it possible to mirror the "Hole Wizard" feature to the other side.  Keep in mind that I am working at the assembly level and not the part level.  I do not want the hole to show up at the part level.  I know I can just create the hole once on each side but for this part I would like to mirror it if possible.

Question 2:
In the assembly mode, is it possible to drill a hole through the wall of a pipe while specifying the end condition as the inside surface (basically an "up to next or up to surface" but those options are not available).

Suggestions welcomed,
Bloodclot

Why do they put Braille dots on the keypad of the drive-up ATM?

RE: 2 Questions at assembly level

If you tried and will not let you do it, it probably won't.
The reason may be because you will have a left hand thd.
Edit the sketch of the hole wizard feature and add another point. You will have two holes in the same skecth.
In an assy, you can take away mtl, but not add. In the hole wiz, just change the depth so it will not go thru.

RE: 2 Questions at assembly level

1) Instead of mirror. Can you use a circular pattern?

2) Up to surface should be available (not up to next, limatation in my opinion) but specifying a depth as ctopher suggests may work better on a curved surface.  What version of SolidWorks are you using?

Hi Regg,
I am using SW2006 SP2.0.  The holes are on the same C/L so using a circular pattern won't work.  Probably a limitation.  I guess I know what my next SW enhancement request will be.

RE: 2 Questions at assembly level

Whats your aversion to creating an in context part from this sch80 pipe, easily creating the features you are having trouble with at the assem level in this part and then using this part in the assem?

RE: 2 Questions at assembly level

Are the holes 180 degrees apart?

Please explain what you mean by that. Selecting the feature & the pipes axis should allow a circular pattern.

A Circular Pattern is the only way (that I know of) to do what you are trying to do.

Perhaps we are missing something. Can you post an image of what you are trying to do. See FAQ559-1100, or FAQ559-1177 if you can post a zipped assy c/w parts.

cheers

The side holes are 180° apart (only one shown in this iso view).  The holes will be pipe tapped from each side so I do not want to just do a "through all" drilled hole.  Can a circular pattern still be done knowing this is the needed orientation?

Why do they put Braille dots on the keypad of the drive-up ATM?

RE: 2 Questions at assembly level

Yes. Just select the tapped hole feature in the FM tree & the axis (temporary or created) of the pipe, then Insert > Assy Feature > Circular Pattern & set the angle & number if instances.

Any reason why this can't be done at the part level? Then if you really wanted to, you could  use the mirror function.

cheers

Our assemblies are true representations of the actual manufacturing process steps.  At the part level the holes do not exist yet (on any of the 12 length configs).

Your suggestion worked great.  Thanks very much for your assistance.
