Renameing Files

Renameing Files

Renameing Files

(OP)
I renamed some part files.  I did it using SW Explorer and had it find all refs an dapply to all.  BUT, one of the parts, which was created as a mirror seems to have had its ref to the orig broken.  Is there a way to re-establish this or do I just have to re-mirror?  I already have dwg made and everything, so I hoped I could avoid all the mess that comes with re-mirroring the part.

Thanks,
Mike

RE: Renameing Files

Locking and Breaking External References
You can lock, unlock, or break the external references of a component.

When you lock the external references on a component, the existing references no longer update and you cannot add any new references to that component.

Once you unlock the external references, you can add new references or edit the existing references.

When you break the external references, the existing external references no longer update and you can add new references to the component.

RE: Renameing Files

...if you are using PDMW, it is easier to rename there. I never had trouble breaking links this way.

Sounds like once broken gone ?  Thanks for the input guys

RE: Renameing Files

It may be possible to fix your references using the following steps.

1) Copy both the mirror part and the original part off to somewhere safe.

2) In the original location rename the original part to the name it had when you created the mirrored part.

3) Start SolidWorks and open the original part and the mirrored part in the original location.  I like to have a fresh SolidWorks running at this point so that I know no other files are in memory.

4) Do a save as of the original part to the new name.  Usually at this point a dialog box will pop up stating that the file is used in other open documents and asking what do you want to do about the references.  I always have to read through the dialog a couple of times to figure out how to answer it, but you want it to change the reference in the mirrored part.

5) Save the mirrored part.

6) Exit SolidWorks.

At this point the mirrored part should be referencing the new name for the original part.  Restart SolidWorks and see if it was successful.

Thanks Eric ... I actually went ahead and re-mirrored, but I will most definitely keep your suggestion in mind and try it when I get a chance.

Thanks,
Mike

RE: Renameing Files

Use Solidworks Explorer to "Replace" the broken link. Open the Mirrored part in it, then right click the broken reference (in red) and select "Replace". Browse for the part.
