ASME SECTION I - PWHT (SR)

ASME SECTION I - PWHT (SR)

ASME SECTION I - PWHT (SR)

HI,
I WANT TO KNOW THAT, IS THERE PWHT (SR) REQUIRE FOR 3" WELD NECK FLANGE WELDED ON 8" STD.SA-53B PIPE (DOWN COMER OF BOILER)?
I NEED HELP ASAP....
MIHIR5577

RE: ASME SECTION I - PWHT (SR)

mihir5577;
Per ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, 2004 Edition, Section I, Table PW-39 post weld heat treatment for P-No 1 base material would be required for circumferential butt welds where the nominal wall thickness is greater than 3/4". Be careful, the nominal wall thickness used for determination of PWHT is the wall thickness at the weld prep of the welding neck flange, not the thickness of the flange.

RE: ASME SECTION I - PWHT (SR)

Ah....After further review, this circumferential butt weld joint would appear to fall under ASME B31.1 Power Piping in lieu of Section I. The PWHT wall thickness recommendation still stands for P-No 1 material, however, your reference is ASME B31.1, 2004 Edition, Table 132.

HI,
THANKS FOR REPLY...BUT I WANT TO KNOW THAT I'LL HAVE TO WELD FLANGE ON DOWNCOMER, BUT FIRST WNRF FLANGE WILL BE WELD ON 3" STD. PIPE (3" LG.) BY CICUMFERENTIAL BUTT WELD AND THAN THIS 3" STD. PIPE WILL BE WELD TO 8" STAD.-SA53B PIPE THROUGH FILLET WELD - FULL PENETRATION WELD.
SO NOW PWHT REQUIRE ON THAT PORTION WHERE 3" PIPE WELD TO 8" STD. PIPE?
AS PER SECTION - PW-39-(h) SHOWS THAT FILLET WELD AND CUT HOLE MORE THAN 2", REQUIRE PWHT.
PLS..LET ME KNOW...
THANKS

RE: ASME SECTION I - PWHT (SR)

Confusing post, but I believe what you are describing is a 3" flanged pipe branch that will be full penetration welded to an 8" pipe run (the boiler downcomer), correct?

Regardless, the code of construction is still ASME B31.1, not Section I (PW-39). You need to be sure that you have adequate reinforcement for this branch connection – see B31.1, Paragraph 104.3.1. The PWHT requirements in Table 132 still apply for the butt weld joining the 3" branch to the 8" downcomer.
