Equipment for Compression of H2

Equipment for Compression of H2

Equipment for Compression of H2

(OP)
Currently one of our plants is using a two stage thermocompressor (condensing steam jet) system to raise the pressure of a small quantity of hydrogenation reactor H2 from 45psig to 350psig. This system was originally installed on the basis of lowest capital cost, but we wish to consider replacing because of high operating cost (inefficient use of 400psig steam) and the undesirable side effects of introducing water into the process.

I am interested to know what alternative compression equipment might be suitable for this service. I want something realiable, low operating cost (i.e. electric or exhaust steam), and low capital cost. A reciprocating compressor with lube oil system etc will probably not be economical due to the small amount of H2 needed. I have worked with several other processes using intensifier systems (diaphragm or piston assembly) where a higher flow of lower pressure air or N2 is used to compress a low flow of N2 to higher pressure, but I don't know if there is any such equipment applicable for compression of H2 to 350psig.

Any ideas for suitable equipment are appreciated.

best wishes,
sshep

In case anyone has a similar application for gas or air boosters try:
http://www.haskel.com/

My previous experience is that these devices work great for no/low flow and high pressure N2 applications like holding pressure on seal pots, tempered water surge drums, etc. To use for process gas compression is new territory, but I am making an inquiry to find out.

best wishes,
sshep
