Identification of Material

Identification of Material

Identification of Material

(OP)
Old German drawing shows the material as:

Werkstoff Mn Si Stg - not sure about the "stg" it is hand written and not exactly clear.

Can anybody offer any more details on what it is?

RE: Identification of Material

Mn Si suggests a plain carbon steel (don't quote me on that though). As for stg... St is normally short for 'stahl' (steel) although the 'g' has me stumped.

Perhaps the 'g' might actually be a number... depending on the circumstances, could be a 6, 9 or even a 5. Still, struggling to make much meaning even out of that.

How old is the drawing?

RE: Identification of Material

What is the component drawing? Perhaps that might give a clue. Next is it a forging/casting/machined product. Some such guess might take you further?

RE: Identification of Material

If your part is a casting, there is a good chance the call-up is for cast steel. I have seen Stg callups for 'stahlguss'

yates - a star - it is a cast steel part and I believe you are correct.
