ASME Section VIII Div 1 MA-2 gives you a methodology for design of bolted flanges. There is another methodology suggested by PVRC.

* What are the key differences between the ASME method and the PVRC method?
* Does PVRC method always give you a heavier flange? - What is the % impact on weight (approximately)
* When is PVRC methodology recommended over the ASME method? Why use PVRC method? Is ASME method unsatisfactory in some cases?
* How common is use of PVRC method?

RE: PVRC + Design of bolted flanges.

The PVRC method is a design approach that utilizes joint leakage or Tightness as the design criteria.  While the new gasket factors are derived from the PVRC developed ROTT (Room Temperature Tightness Test), the actual design approach is being developed by an ASME SWG (Special Working Group).  The design equations and methodology are still developing and, to date, these BFJ equations and method are not code.  These BFJ design equations are intended to ultimately replace or augment the current section 8 div 1, appendix 2 flange design rules which incorporate the antiquated m&y factors.

Depending upon which level of joint Tightness you design for, the resultant flanges may or may not be thicker than those currently designed per the existing rules.
