How to determine Test Duration?
How to determine Test Duration?
(OP)
I have to conduct a Lab tests (Corrosion) tests on a material ( The objective is to evaluate the weight loss/Rate of corrosion in service). Service fluid is known and pressures are known and the operating temperatures are known.
Life of the item is designed for 20 years.
I need an ASTM/BS/EN/ISO general test guidance note or international acceptance practice that specify the accelerated test duration and test temperature, so that the test results can reasonably be co related/extrapolated to service life.
Thanks in advance.

RE: How to determine Test Duration?
I ususally put very little faith in accelerated lab tests for prediction of actual service life. For example, 1000 hours in a salt-fog chamber relates to......1000 hours in a salt fog chamber!
Before saying anything more in that light, can you provide a little more info?
- what is the service environment; what is the proposed accelerated test(s); etc.
RE: How to determine Test Duration?
IF you are dealing with uniform corrosion.
And IF you can show that there are no 'breakaway' conditions.
Then maybe you can figure out how to raise the temp and pressure some to accelerate the testing.
Or can you find a standard test that creates the same type of corrosion? Then you could use that method.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.
