why haven't the world not resorted to the use of soil as building materials considering its cheap and structural benefits?

According to Dominic Dowling, about a third of the world's population lives in mud-brick houses.

Personally, having survived the Loma Prieta earthquake, I'm glad I was in a concrete structure, designed to withstand quake forces.
