Abaqus CAE V6.5 and V6.3

Abaqus CAE V6.5 and V6.3

Abaqus CAE V6.5 and V6.3

(OP)
Hi,

I'm working with a model that has really small parts, of about 40 microns. Using Abaqus 6.3 I can easilly sketch them and everything works fine, but with abaqus 6.5 it's impossible to have a detail finer than 1mm.
I know that abaqus uses "dimensionless units", but in order to work in SI units and keep everything as simple as possible, I've been trying to work in SI units everywhere.
Even if I sketch the parts in 6.3 and import them to 6.5, it just flattens out my solids.
Does anyone know if there is a way around this? Why this apparent step back between versions?
I'll probably have to change the units in model, but my experience is that I'll have to go through some messy stuff before having everything working ok...
Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks

RE: Abaqus CAE V6.5 and V6.3

I think you have to set the graphic rendering on a higher quality. I have 1 micron parts in my models and CAE 6.5 works fine. The rendering quality is set to medium by default. Thus, the parts look misrepresented, for such tiny dimensions; excepting the visualization quality everything else should work ok.

I'm using V6.5-4, I tried setting Curve Refinement (under View - Part Display Options) to Extra-Fine, but still no success. Was that what you were refering to? If not, could you tell me how to set the rendering to high quality?
Are you using the same version of abaqus?
Thanks for your help

RE: Abaqus CAE V6.5 and V6.3

Yes, that is what I was referring to. I am using both 6.4 and 6.5-1. Another difference is that my dimensions are in mm, thus of order of 10^-3. To have them displayed properly I have to select Curve-Refinement on "Extra-Fine". I suspect your dimensions are of order of 10^-5, since you mensioned you are using SI.

Actually, I have just try modeling a part with such small dimensions and I run into same problem. However the mesh based representation is not affected.

Does this problem affect the mesh representation, too?

Hi Xerf,

happy new year.
You're right, the meshing is ok. That kind of solves all the problems because when assemblying the piece, now I can visualize everything as it it should be.
Yes, I'm working with dimensions of the order of 10^-5. Actually I have already changed everything else in my model to be consistent with the mm-Tonne and it's working fine, thats means that now my dimensions are of the order 10^-2, but with your suggestion of visualizing the mesh I'll probably go back to SI again.
Still, it looks like a bug, doesn't it? In V6.3-1 this didn't happen...
Thanks a lot for all your help,

A happy new year to you , too!
You are welcome.

I have not used 6.3, but with 6.4 and 6.5, I have faced other CAE visualization issues as well. I wonder if the graphic card has any influence on these problems...
