How do I determine the size of syphon breaker pipe required on an axial flow pump to ensure it functions correctly

You needs to provide more info.  E.G.  gpm and pipe size

By function correctly do you mean in both steady and unsteady state conditions? If so you should use a surge analysis program like AFT's Impulse where you can model the performance of an air release/vacuum breaker type valve.

The are four applicable equations. Two for in flow and two for out flow. the equation changes depending if the flow is critial or not.
