Selecting Multiple Objects

Selecting Multiple Objects

Selecting Multiple Objects

(OP)
While working in 3D I have several different layers, each having its own specific purpose.  However, I have one layer that it seems has made its own region.  When I try and select one solid, it automatically selects four solids.

Two of these solids also exported themselves out of another layer to this perplexing layer.  How can I select only one of these solids without having to explode the solids into regions?
