Does anyone know how to determine the max capacity of a horizontal recircualtor package that's 60" x 18', operating at -35 degees F, with a 4:1 recirc rate and wet return connections on opposite ends of the vessel.  The refrigerant used is NH3.

I've tried Evapco's RVS catalog and Frick's as well, but their vessels aren't nearly as long as the one that we have.

I think you will find the diameter pretty much controls the size for a specific capacity.  The length is added for surge or liquid volume.  You can find the sizing criteria in the ASHAE Handbook.

I'd give you an approximate number, except we are moving and all of my data boks are on a moving truck.

Imok, check your last post, the 0.0575 can't be right.


The Separation Capacity of a horizontal vessel is going to be very much the same for any 60" Diameter, from any manufacturer, until the pump requirements kick into the equation...So if a reputable manufacturer constructed the package intact and knew its refrigerant, temperature and operating requirements, it will be tall enough that the (original) pumps will have sufficient NPSH at a specific, maintained operating level.  An it won't vary much from manufacturer to manufacturer.  If the pumps have been renewed and upsized, or if the pump inlet piping was designed with a higher evaporating temperature intended, or if operations require that the liquid level be otherwise run "high", the separation space is being encroached upon...

Providing the pumps have enough flow and pressure, the answer for a purpose-built package should be about 425 TR.
