Rather than searching all states websites, is there a web site that states which states require a SE License and what tests they require?

RE: SE License

Try NCEES.

RE: SE License

Brian, you pretty well need to go state by state anyway.

For example, as I remember from several years ago, California requires SE for certain specific items- buildings over 200' and the like.  It didn't really look like that much of the structural work required an SE license.  However, in my industry (water tanks), most of our customers in CA wanted a SE seal on all drawings even though the state didn't require it, and I suspect this is true in a lot of other cases.  So you need to consider local usage as well as state requirements.

On the tests, check on CA and NY- I think if you satisfy those, you'll pretty well meet other states' requirements as well.

Some states show SE or CE or ME or whatever on the PE seal, but even on those that don't, you can't practice in areas you're not competent to practice in.  And states that don't show SE or CE on the seal may still regulate the titles, and whether you can call yourself an SE, or what the requirements are.  All in all, it's a mess.  Pick the state you're most interested in and start from there.

RE: SE License

I'll add IL to that list.  As Jstephen said, you could still design buildings in CA with a civil PE, but in IL, you can't do anything structural without an SE.
