Polybuthene Oil

Polybuthene Oil

Polybuthene Oil

(OP)
Transformer cable box which have two compartment, one is filled with transformer oil (disconnecting chamber) and the other one fill polybuthene oil (power cable box).

Unfortunely, the tranformer oil from disconnecting chamber leaks to power cable box and mixed together with polybuthene oil.

We will rectify the leakage point, the question is can we reuse the polybuthene oil?
or
Can polybuthene oil mixed with transformer oil without affecting the insulation level?

Thanks.

RE: Polybuthene Oil

Dear sky72,

the first thing I'd do is mixing transformer oil with polybuthene and see if the two are miscible, i.e, they mix
together. If so, I'd use a dielectric tester to measure
the dielectric strength of the mix.

The two liquids are used for insulation.  If they mix together, there's a good chance that the contaminated polybuthene is still good enough.

RE: Polybuthene Oil

Consider the reason polybuthene was used. It is considered biodegradable. Your other oil may not be. While they may be compatible for your transformer they may not be for external reasons.
