In an assembly, where positions are already determined, and a user wishes to extract geometry of one assembly component RELATIVE to another asembly component - with the resulting geometry in a detail model:

NOTE: all models shown are displayed in the 'isometric' view, to make clear that the geometry has not been cut and pasted (and therefore positioned) into the default 3D reference system.








Now, if I want the block to appear in the .CATPart file with the cylinder, Do the following:

1) In the assembly model, activate the cylinder model in the tree, by either scrolling down, or double clicking the part in space. (the workbench will change from assembly, to a shape or design workbench - e.g. GSD, Part Design, Wireframe and surface, etc.)



2) Open a window with the cylinder model, or if you already have it open, select the following option from the menu: "Window -> Tile Vertically"

You should have a screen that looks like this:



3) Now, it's time to do the work.  In the assembly model, switch to the GSD or GS1 workbench. (see step 1 for reference)

4)Highlight the part that you want to import into the current 3D workspace.  Selecting only a portion of the part, as shown, is acceptable.



5) Select the 'Disassemble' function.



6) Update the model, if necessary.



Note that the models are still in isometric, and the orientation of the result is true to the assembly location.

This method is very good for designing parts based on more than one concept, or making new parts from existing.

Forgot to mention - selecting the 'Part body' before disassembling will result in an isolated solid.  The above example was shown using a face, and the resulting output was faces.
