marking steel for galvanizing

marking steel for galvanizing

marking steel for galvanizing

(OP)
Hi all,

How can I permanently mark structural steel that has to go through galvanizing process. I tried using die punch to mark the steels but the galvanize process usually covers parts of the marks, rendering it unreadable.

I read about embossing, or using steel tag. How do they work and are they costly?

Thank you

RE: marking steel for galvanizing

koeskoes,
Many who build with structrual steel apply marking by welding a bead in the numeral shape before coating.  Some structural steel has imprints created during rolling.
I'm not certain about a "die punch" but we have imprinted plate with an embossing die for 3/8" figures and had them turn out okay.  Secret seemed to be keeping the stamped face vertical to allow excess to flow off instead of having it fill the imprint.

We encountered a similar problem a few years back, we notched a corner to indicate galv.Seemed to work :))
