OK to uninstall SW2005 after installing SW2006 as new installation?

OK to uninstall SW2005 after installing SW2006 as new installation?

OK to uninstall SW2005 after installing SW2006 as new installation?

(OP)
Back when I installed SW2006, I installed it as a new installation and left my old SW2005 in place for my customizations to be carried over.  Are there any problems in removing or uninstalling SW2005?  Which way is best?

Thanks!

Tim

It is OK to leave both, if set up correctly.

Well I'd like to remove it to take back the 1.2GB that it's using as long as doing so doesn't cause any problems.

If SW06 was installed into its own folders, completely independent of SW05, then using the standard Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs function should be fine.

cheers

If you uninstall 2005 after you do a new install for 2006, it creates an extra solidworks folder in your program files by the name solidworks(2). Even if you uninstall 2005 now, it will not remove the solidworks folder from your program files. Even if it does, you will be stuck with all your paths set to solidworks(2)folder. Then you would have to go back and keep changing the file locations to solidworks(2) because everything by default looks for solidworks in program files.

This is the way I have done it at work on all the engg workstations and at home. Go to control panel and uninstall 2005. Still it would not remove all the folders. Then physically delete the soldiworks folder from your program files. Then do a new install for 2006.

That is the reason I always suggest that when you install the next version of SW to use the version at the end of it.

Example:

C:\program files\Solidworks06

This away you don't get confused on which folder you want to remove after you uninstall.

RE: OK to uninstall SW2005 after installing SW2006 as new installation?

(OP)
I'm using Windows XP Professional exclusively on all my PCs, so SW2006 is in a folder named "SolidWorks 2006" and SW2005 was in a folder named "SolidWorks 2005".  When I first installed 2006, I left 2005 in place so 2006 could discover anything it would out of 2005 to carry over as many of my customizations as possible.

Now that 2006 seems to have been running fine for some time, I went ahead and uninstalled 2005 and deleted its folder in Program Files on my home PC.  If all goes well, I'll be doing the same on my work PC soon.

Thanks!

Tim

Check some of your file locations, those are copied from SW05 to SW06 and if they are missing then SW06 will puke on you.
