Subsitute API pipe for ASTM HSS

Subsitute API pipe for ASTM HSS

Subsitute API pipe for ASTM HSS

(OP)
I have spec'd 16" O.D. round HSS for a project (bending application).  The fabricator has a large quantity of 16" O.D. API 5L X70 that is available at less cost.  The yield strength of the API pipe is greater but I'm not familiar with the API standards.  Is anyone familiar with API and its use in a structural application?

RE: Subsitute API pipe for ASTM HSS

What ASTM designation did you initially have in mind? Are the API designated pipes seamless?

ASTM A500 Grade B.  I don't believe the API pipes are seamless.

RE: Subsitute API pipe for ASTM HSS

There have been a few discussions regarding this type of substitution in this forum and also on the Seaint listserv (do google search)...guess unavailability of HSS shapes has been a concern.

The reason I asked whether it was seamless was because of this http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=140779
