American Box section info

American Box section info

American Box section info

(OP)
Hello all,
I have been hunting the net for American box section data.  We have to design a frame for manufacture in the US, and I want to make it out of readily available material.
Can someone guide me to the right info?  Or maybe send me the data?

Thanks in advance to you all

Mark.

RE: American Box section info

A place to start would be McMaster-Carr:

http://www.mcmaster.com

Click on Metals, Aluminum, then the shape you want.

Cory

Thanks for your reply,
I should have been more clear, I require steel box section.  I require details on the corner radius, mass per foot also the second moment of area ect.
Sim to our BS/EN10210-2:1997.  I have it in an excel doc.
But I require US standards.

If anyone can help,

Cheers
Mark

RE: American Box section info

I believe the standard you need is ASTM A 501 STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR HOT-FORMED WELDED AND SEAMLESS CARBON STEEL STRUCTURAL TUBING.  Go to astm.org and check out the abstract to make sure.

Yeah I think thats what I'm after, but i still cant find and info/Dimensions.

RE: American Box section info

PieBoy,

You will have to purchase the standard to obtain the information.  Very little in life is free...

RE: American Box section info

You might check out manufactures like Bethlehem Steel or a major distrubuter like Ryerson Steel

RE: American Box section info

Generally the outside corner radius is 2X the wall thickness although I believe the standard allows it to be as much as 3X, 2X is much more common.
this is what my old E.M. Jorgensen stock list has to say on the subject:

wall thickness tol is +/-10%
outside dim tol:
(largest outside dimension)

2-1/2" and under            +/- 0.020
over 2-1/2 to 3-1/2"        +/- 0.025
over 3-1/2 to 5-1/2"        +/- 0.030
Over 5-1/2"                   +/- 1%

squareness of sides can deviate from 90 degrees by +/- 2 degrees

RE: American Box section info

BTW, there are a couple different standards for Square and rectangular tubing:
ASTM A501 is 58KSI UTS and 36 KSI Yeild and 23% elongation
ASTM A500 comes in three grades:
Grade A 45KSI UTS 39 KSI Yeild and 25% elong.
Grade B 58KSI UTS 46 KSI Yeild and 23% Elong.
Grade C (also known as ROPS or Roll Over Protection Systems, tubing. It is used for roll cages and cold temp structures) This material is comparatively new and my EMJ book doesn't cover it, but it is stronger than Grade B and has Charpy requirements for cold temp service. I believe it is roughly similar to ASTM A 574 Gr50 in both strength and chemistry but I could be wrong.

RE: American Box section info

Second moment of area = (a^2 - b^2)/12

RE: American Box section info

Try the Steel Tube Institute - http://www.steeltubeinstitute.org/  Click on the "About Us" button and then literature. There are two publications that have section properties.  "Dimensions and Section Properties" has larger structural tubing and "Handbook of Welded Carbon Steel Tubing" has smaller tubing properties.

Regards.
