Crane support

Crane support

Crane support

(OP)
I saw a conceptual detail come thru our office the other day and was wondering what people thought about it.

It was a rough scematic for a preengineered building were the crane was supported of the frame with brackets. I have never seen this detail before. when i have done this it has always been "double columns" one for the frame and one for the crane beam to run over.

It appears more efficient to me to support the crane off a second column. that way there is no need to torque the frame anymore then needed. Obviously anything can be done if designed properly. I guess it may be better if the crane was lightly loaded.

has anyone seen this detail. does it casue any propblems making it work? will the metal building people even design it this way? Dopeople like the detail?
At this point i think i like the concentically loaded columns way myself

thanks in advance for your time

RE: Crane support

This is standard way of supporting cranes on PEMB frames. It adds bending moment on the frame column. However, these columns usually are deep and efficient.

This detail will tend to save space on the floor by eliminating a column.

I would not hesitate using it at all, if properly designed.

Lutfi

RE: Crane support

I have seen this in many plants, both old and newer installations. The ones I have seen have all been lighter applications - 10,000# or less. As long as it is designed properly, it should be okay, even with heavier design loads.

RE: Crane support

What size crane?  What's the duty cycle?
