If, Designerism

If, Designerism

If, Designerism

(OP)
were a word, what would it mean?

RE: If, Designerism

It would mean calling them designer clothes.  Does that mean clothing worn by a design engineer?

RE: If, Designerism

(OP)
metman, I don't think designerism can exist. A designer is a designer. Now I am confused. I should have introduced it as designism.

RE: If, Designerism

Perhaps this would qualify as a designerism...

Quote:

"I don't like it.  It swims when it should swish."
--industrial designer (name withheld) reviewing the 3D results of his 2D proposal.

RE: If, Designerism

The belief system that a designer uses in his designs.  Sometimes rigid and dogmatic (I've always done it that way and I'm not changing now).

RE: If, Designerism

Brother in law won't let anything in his house unless it's "designer".
"Designer" table, "designer" chairs, "designer" TV etc.
Could his taste be described as "designerism"?

"I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go past." Douglas Adams

RE: If, Designerism

"designerism" is an irrational dislike of designers.

RE: If, Designerism

I think a designerism is a term or word that designers use to describe things to management... maybe not as precise as some engineeringese terms like Gas Axe or RCH but in that vein...

"If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut."
-- by Albert Einstein

RE: If, Designerism

I'd vote along the same lines as RobWard.

Designerism is that 'need' to buy and wear designer clothes.

May I ask why you ask?

I heard it in this sentence, "(name witheld) is a slave to designerism" and didn't get the opportunity to ask what was meant.

designerism Superfluous, self-conscious design.

The listing on the site poses the example question: "Just how many types of doorknob does the world need?".  Anyone who is truly a designer would know the answer is "One more, if it's my design."

RE: If, Designerism

(OP)
The Tick Self concious yes; has to be, but superfluous, does that mean extra, rather than not required, surplus to requirements, redundant, in excess to requirements, unnecessary? I think not, other wise we would all be dressed in sackcloth.
It's a fine perception thing; I think designers are all about that.

Kind of reminds me of an old Dilbert strip...

"Since my appearance only affects other people, it's not worth optimising it."

If clothing design were left to engineers, it'd need to satifisy climate and decency requirements only!

RE: If, Designerism

Not even decency--those social niceties have no calculable practical value.

Really?  I think you guys are forgetting about reproduction.

Actually, HgTX, I'd expect that kind of sentiment from an accountant or manager type rather than an engineer.  I doubt it was an engineer who dreamed up the cubicle.
