Kwikbolts for Bins

Kwikbolts for Bins

Kwikbolts for Bins

(OP)
I'm sending out a drawing today that consists of base plate layouts and loads for cement silos, agg bins, and conveyors.  Some are indoors and some are outside.  Today it was suggested that should use kwikbolt type expansion anchors instead of bolts embedded in concrete.  These are for a climate with snow and frost.

Is this a good practice or not?
Is there something in the IBC?

Sorry for the imposition but my IBC codebooks are at home today.

Thanks,
-Mike

RE: Kwikbolts for Bins

IBC-2003 section 1913.1 allows expansion anchors in hardened concrete.  Design is per ACI-318 Appendix D.
I don't see anything wrong with using the kwik-bolts in your application.  Kwik-II's are A510 steel.  Might be a good idea to check with the manufacturer to make sure the cold application is ok.

RE: Kwikbolts for Bins

Hilti says to use the hot dipped galvanized or stainless bolts for exterior applications.

The ICC report (1385) for Kwik Bolt 3 says that they also can't be used in fatigue or shock loading conditions.  Not sure what your loading conditions for the conveyors are, but I thought I'd mention it.

For some reason I've always been a bigger fan of adhesive anchors in these situations.  I know the hole cleaning makes a bit more work in the field but I think it's worth it.  Probably more just personal preference than anything.

RE: Kwikbolts for Bins

Also note that Kwik-IIs are not permissable under IBC 2003 - only Kwik-IIIs have passed the prequalification testing.  Would stick with headed anchor rods or perhaps post-installed adhesive anchors.

Thanks to everyone for the information.

I would have preferred embedded anchors but it looks like the right expansion bolt used properly will be ok.  That solves my problem for today, my drawing will go out, and I will follow this up with the gathering of technical data and the appropriate codes to make sure I do the details correctly.

Your help is appreciated.

Regards,
-Mike
