Dimensioning Features that cannot be shown true size
Dimensioning Features that cannot be shown true size
(OP)
It is normal practice when creating a drawing to choose a view that shows particular features true size. However, in SW it is possible to show features that cannot be shown true size in any view. In my case I have a helical cutter blade (x-section swept about a helix). What is the best way to present features on an object that has no flat surfaces?

Just sweep a rectangular section around a 1/8 turn helix. Then think about how you would position it in a drawing so that somebody could get dimensions off of it.

Is the helix a standalone feature or a just a feature of a part?
More info is needed to be able to answer your original question. Without seeing the part, how are we to know what you can use as a reference, or what the section could be oriented to? An image would really help.

RE: Dimensioning Features that cannot be shown true size
If a helix is around an axis that is square with the drawing frame of reference, it takes two projections to get the "helix normal" view. This is similar to what is required to dimension a compund miter end.
My model pile: <http://www.esoxrepublic.com/models/>
file: CompoundAngleToGetHelixSection.zip
I used an axis to reference the section normal. A plane wouldn't do for referencing drawing entities to the model.

RE: Dimensioning Features that cannot be shown true size
Back to the problem at hand. Most of the responses so far have been specific to the helix and have referred to getting a decent view of the cross section. That of course is the easy part. It wouldn't be so easy if I varied the cross section as I swept it. Now, just suppose there were two bolt holes in the helix shown above. Each one is created normal to the surface. The dimensioning for the bolt hole feature size shouldn't be too hard to do. But the location dimensions, that is another matter. I would like to be nice to the machinist and the QC folk and give dimensions to some datum. Problem is there doesn't seem to be anything handy to use as a datum. The axes and construction geometry I use in SW to create such things are lost the minute I create a drawing and for sure are lost when the part is made.
And just to avoid the obvious, this part would be made using a CNC process or perhaps cast from an FDM wax pattern.

And make a drawing like this...
I make a sketch in the drawing to get points I can actually dimension to along the helix. Is this what you'tr looking for?
