Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

(OP)
I have a single loop helix and I swept a.312 dia. circle along it as a path.  When I import the model into the drawing I now find that I can not add a center point to dimension to and I can not dimension the radius.  Is there any way I can add the dimension to this drawing?  Thank you in advance to any kind soul who can answer this for me.

RE: Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

You may want to show your circle that you used to form your helix, then dimension that circle in your drawing.  You'll have to enable "show sketches" for your drawing, show the sketch in the model, then create the model view.

Thanks for the response.  That only would help for the center point.  It does nothing for the correct radius, because it it a swept model.  I am getting ready to turn it in without dimensions and give up on it.  Thanks for the help.

RE: Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

You can change the Diameter Dimension to a Radius, or make a COnstruction sketch in the model and use that in your drawing.

RE: Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

thanks again, Scot.  I do know I can change it, but that is not the problem, the problem is that I wined up pointing to the middle of the tube and with the wrong dimension.  This is the easy one, can't waite for the complex bent tubes.  Like I said I think I will just turn this in as is and if they don't like it let someone else try it.

RE: Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

Then like I said, make some construction Geometry at the right size and use that in your Drawing. You make that geometry in relation to the feature if you need to.

Not every sketch requires a Feature.

Actually the composite curve made it so I could plant the center point and then I lied to it.  I had to add a circle and I measured it and made it invisible.  Thanks again.

RE: Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

Don't you already have a circle, which is the sketch on which your helix is based?  Simply show that sketch and dimension it and you should be set.

Thank you for the response, but there is a circle being swept on the helix and that would not give the crrect radius then.

RE: Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

If you were able to create a view looking at what is the od of this swept feature in the drawing then why cant you use the cirlce skethc the helix is based on to then create a centerline that extends coincident to the outer edge of this swept solid. Then dimension the centerline.

Or just fake it somehow.

If I use the original circle for the helixmy dia is .312 off and so I did fake it.

RE: Dimsioning aSwept Helix?????

If the OD (or ID) is the critical dimension then use a circle of that size to define the helix and make the sweep sketch coincident to the helix sketch at the edge.

So an ID helix would have the sweep sketch attached to the helix so that it sweeps on the outside of the helix. If an OD helix, the sweep sketch would sweep the inside of the helix.
