SWITCHING OF CAPACITOR BANKS

SWITCHING OF CAPACITOR BANKS

SWITCHING OF CAPACITOR BANKS

(OP)
For large Capacitor Banks, like 300MVA, 69kV a special breaker must be used - SF-6, vacuum, oil C.B. etc.
What is going on for the capacitor bank 300kVA, connected to MCC 600Volts ?  What type of breaker must be used ?

RE: SWITCHING OF CAPACITOR BANKS

Capacitor switching is the most difficult challenge for any breaker.  You need to look at ratings for capacitor switching.  Any device can be used as long as the rating is adequate, but there are special ratings for capacitor switching.

RE: SWITCHING OF CAPACITOR BANKS

Pristava,
There is a device called Switchsync(Point on wave) relay which switches in  or out a cap bank on the zero crossing of the voltage wave form, thereby minimising the arching on the breaker contacts.I do not know whether it can be used on 600V breakers.Try ABB/AREVA websites for more information.

Good luck!!!!
