Moment Frame Connection
Moment Frame Connection
(OP)
Hi,
All the moment connections I have seen involved welding a beam between the flanges of a Wide Flange column. I understand that this is the typical condition because the column (most of the time) extends up in the structure.
My question is in a single floor moment frame, it is necessary for the beam to be welded between the flanges of the columns? To put it another way, can the beam extend OVER the columns and column is actually welded to the beam flanges?
Thanks, Mike

I just wonder the presence of fastener holes in beam flanges of a moment resisting frame connection does really affect the flexural capacity of the beam member (usuallt I-sections)?
Thanks
