Series combination ratings

(OP)
I am reading some caltalogue about series combination applications. According to CEC and NEC, It is allowed to use the combinations. Is it common in north America?

RE: Series combination ratings

Unfortunately, yes.  The combination of upstream and downstream devices must be a tested combination with UL listing.

This is widely used in commercial buildings where the initial costs are the primary consideration.

RE: Series combination ratings

dpc is right on.

My experience is that they're becoming more and more common.

RE: Series combination ratings

I agree that the use of "series Rating" is quite common on commercial projects where cost is of primary concern, but it has some severe restrictions which require special attention.

In addition it may not be used on emergency power systems, and should not be used where service reliability is important.
