Optical speed measurement

(OP)
Anybody know of a manufacturer of reliable optical speed pickups (not handheld).  I'm after a automotive test bed install to read off a front pulley with a strip of reflective tape on.  I've used a particular type in the past and even though it was set up right, ie dark pulley, correct tape and distance it proved unreliable.  Anybody know of anything good out there.

RE: Optical speed measurement

I suggest a slotted wheel with an interupted beam optical sensor. Not as quite easy as stick on tape but bulletproof.
