AR 500 plate in non-traditional use
(OP)
I am currently in a situation where people want to use 500 BHN liner plate in a loaded application (ie, chutes). They will be under load.
I am looking for viable for & against arguments

RE: AR 500 plate in non-traditional use
Typically, AR 500 plate is furnished in a quenched and tempered heat treatment condition for use under impact loading and abrasive wear service conditions.
Caution should be used for fabrication (bending and welding). Normally, a lower strength filler metal like E7018 H4 weld rod is used for welding this plate under controlled preheat and interpass conditions.
Frankly, I would still use the AR 500 plate as liner material instead of building chutes and running the risk of having to replace section of the chutes for repairs instead of simply changing out liners.

It may be hard to obtain right now as the supply is tight due to armor plate use for our adventure in Iraq.
