WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE PLANNING CONCEPT OF MULTI-MODAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS...IS IT A DEAD ISSUE?...THE PRICE OF OIL IS FINALLY GOING UP; THE PUBLIC FUNDED INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM SEEMS CLOGGED WITH VASTLY INCREASED NUMBERS OF PLEASURE VEHICLES, AND COMMERCIAL TRUCKING...AMTRAK IS STILL FORCED TO BEG USE OF PRIVATELY OWNED FREIGHT RAILBEDS, AND DEREGULATION OF THE FREIGHT LINES HAS RESULTED IN THOUSANDS OF ABANDONED RAIL LINES....THE US HAS EXPENSIVE AND INADEQUATE RAIL PASSENGER TRANSPORT.. AIR TRANSPORT IS INCREASING DAILY ...ADDITIONAL LANES TO THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM CAN ONLY ALLOW MARGINAL INCREASES TO THE TRAFFIC VOLUME CARRYING CAPACITIES OF THE PUBLIC ROAD SYSTEMS....HIGH SPEED LIGHT RAIL SYSTEMS GENERALLY CANT GET TO BID STAGES BEFORE FUNDS ARE CUT...MONORAIL, AND MAGLEV ARE EVIDENTLY STILL TOO ESOTERIC TO OBTAIN MUCH PUBLIC SUPPORT
...IT LOOKS TO ME THAT WE ARE HEADED FOR A DIFFERENT VERSION OF THE 1974 ENERGY CRUNCH TRANSPORT WISE IN THE NEXT 10 -15 YEARS.
ANY HOPE OF AVERTING ANOTHER CRUNCH IN THIS TIMEFRAME?

A standard for the rail bed design and construction need to be settled upon and the prototype connections funded and initiated...
With the recent advent of the new hi strength fibre reinforced concrete trechnology ...the need to keep our domestic steel production alive and the current (abundant and relatively cheap) availability of necessary metallurgical coal in this country for making high strength steels we need to get moving before conditions change for the worse.
sorry about the soap box but i really think we need a separate rail transport system analogous to the national interstate defense highway system..........................
